Polygamy A Common Type Of Marriage - 1468 Words

DEFINITION Polygamy can be defined as a type of marriage in which more than one spouse exists in the marriage. Bigamy is the act of going into another marriage while already being married to someone else. HISTORY OF POLYGAMY Polygamy dates back to a long time ago and has been practiced for many centuries by people from different cultures and different religious beliefs and backgrounds. Centuries back, the most common type of polygamy was polygyny. No one really knows how or where polygamy originates from but there are ideas. Polygamy is more common in places that were once part of a colony. An example of such a place is Africa. Polygamy is very common in parts of Africa that were once colonized, take for example Nigeria. A reason why polygamy exists in such places is because during the period of colonization there were more women than men due to the fact that most men were off fighting wars. In such cases, ladies were married off to men who already had wives and men with more than one wives got a lot of popularity. It is also believed that polygamy originated from religion. Although there were cases of polygamy in Christianity, it was never written anywhere in the bible that a man cou ld have more than one wife. With this, there were still lots of cases mentioned about a man having more than one wife in the old testament in the Bible. Powerful men and kings had hundreds of wives and concubines.
